Alin Dincă: “Our goal is to give the goalkeeper the tools to make his own decisions.”

Goalkeeper coach Alin Dincă discusses Iran's 2026 World Cup exit, detailed work with Alireza Beiranvand, and the demands placed on modern goalkeepers.

Author: M. Schäfer  - 23.07.2026

Iran remained unbeaten in all three group matches at the 2026 World Cup—yet still had to head home after the group stage. Three draws against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt were not enough for "Team Melli" to reach the knockout stage of a World Cup for the first time. One of the standout performers was once again Alireza Beiranvand, who impressed with several strong saves, particularly during the 0–0 draw against Belgium.

Working alongside him is Alin Dincă. The Romanian goalkeeping coach has been part of the Iranian national team's coaching staff since 2023. In an interview with torwart.de, Dincă discusses the bitter World Cup exit, Beiranvand’s performances, the detailed preparation for various opponents, and the qualities a world-class goalkeeper must possess today.

"We proved that we are competitive"

torwart.de: Iran was eliminated after the group stage but put in an outstanding performance at this World Cup. Looking back now, what feeling prevails: pride in the team's performance or disappointment at missing out on the next round?

Alin Dincă: Immediately after our elimination, the disappointment was naturally immense. Our clear goal was to reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in the history of Iranian football. We knew the historic significance that would have held for our country and our fans.

With a little distance, however, pride prevails. We proved that we are competitive at the highest international level. The team played with great discipline, passion, and tactical maturity, representing Iran superbly.

Ultimately, at this level, it was the fine margins that made the difference. It is precisely these details that we need to develop further. That is why, despite the disappointment, we are taking away many positive insights.

torwart.de: What is your overall assessment of the team's sporting performance at the tournament? Did the team deliver what you had set out to achieve before the World Cup?

Alin Dincă: Basically, yes. We wanted to play as a compact unit, remain defensively solid, and at the same time consistently capitalize on our strengths in transition play. We managed to do that for large parts of the tournament.

It was particularly important to me that the team remained mentally focused in every match and never lost faith in our game plan. Of course, we are now critically analyzing the situations where we could have acted more efficiently. After all, at the World Cup level, success or failure often hinges on just a few moments.

torwart.de: In your view, what was the decisive reason why the team didn't make it to the knockout stage?

Alin Dincă: I don't think it can be reduced to a single reason.

At this level, outcomes are often decided not by major errors, but by many small details. A better decision, winning one more duel, or playing out a situation with greater determination—that is ultimately what makes the crucial difference.

We were competitive in every game. That is exactly why our elimination hurts so much. At the same time, it confirms that we are on the right track.

torwart.de: Which aspect of the Iranian team's performance might have been underestimated by outsiders?

Alin Dincă: I think our tactical discipline and our professionalism.

Many people associate Iranian football primarily with passion and mentality. What is often underestimated is our players' high level of tactical understanding. They implement complex concepts very quickly, work with great professionalism, and invest a tremendous amount in their development every day.

"Beiranvand brings tremendous composure to our team"

torwart.de: How do you rate Alireza Beiranvand's World Cup performance overall?

Alin Dincă: I am very satisfied with his performance.

Alireza possesses vast experience and, at the same time, brings impressive composure to our team. As a goalkeeping coach, I don't just look for spectacular saves; I focus primarily on positioning, decision-making, communication, and game control. He demonstrated a very high level in all these areas.

torwart.de: Which of his actions stands out most in your memory?

Alin Dincă: Interestingly, the first things that come to mind aren't spectacular saves.

For me, the decisive moments are often those where a goalkeeper—through his positioning or decision-making—prevents a clear-cut chance from even developing. That is precisely one of Alireza’s greatest strengths.

torwart.de: Alireza specifically highlighted the training work you did together. Which actions during this World Cup were the result of very specific preparation?

Alin Dincă: Our work begins long before kick-off. We analyze our opponents in great detail—their finishing patterns, crossing profiles, set-piece routines, and the behavior of individual attacking players.

In training, we simulate these situations as realistically as possible. When a goalkeeper handles a match situation exactly the way we prepared for it, it validates our work.

However, the key is not simply to dictate solutions to the goalkeeper. Instead, our goal is to equip him with the tools to make his own decisions.

Preparation, analysis, and workload management

torwart.de: How do you prepare a goalkeeper for such varied opponents during a World Cup?

Alin Dincă: We analyze both individual players and a team's overall attacking play.

Our goal isn't to overload the goalkeeper with information; he needs to go into the match with a clear head. That’s why we focus on the information that can actually make a difference.

torwart.de: What does your work as a goalkeeper coach actually look like during a World Cup tournament?

Alin Dincă: At a World Cup, every day is structured down to the last detail.

Between recovery, training, video analysis, and meetings, there is hardly any time for anything else. Just as important as the training itself is striking the right balance between workload and recovery.

torwart.de: What role does data analysis play in your daily work with the goalkeepers today?

Alin Dincă: A very important one—but it never replaces the coach's eye.

Data and video analysis help us evaluate performances more objectively. However, the best decision always comes from a combination of analysis, experience, and daily work on the training pitch.

What defines a world-class goalkeeper

torwart.de: What defines a world-class goalkeeper today?

Alin Dincă: A modern goalkeeper must read the game, make bold decisions, and actively participate in the build-up play.

However, for me, the most important quality remains consistency. Being world-class means performing at the highest level over a period of years.

torwart.de: Which qualities do you particularly appreciate in Alireza Beiranvand?

Alin Dincă: His composure and his personality.

He instills a sense of security in the team, works with great professionalism, and—despite his vast experience—remains open to new ideas. It is precisely this willingness to keep developing that sets him apart.

"A World Cup is the pinnacle of our profession"

torwart.de: What did you personally take away from this World Cup?

Alin Dincă: A World Cup is the pinnacle of our profession.

Every training session, every analysis, and every match provides new experiences. For me, this tournament was both a validation and a source of motivation.

torwart.de: Is there a moment from the World Cup that you will never forget?

Alin Dincă: The atmosphere before the matches.

Walking into the tunnel, hearing the national anthem, and knowing that you are representing your country on the biggest stage in world football—that is a truly special moment.

torwart.de: What will the focus be in the coming months?

Alin Dincă: We want to continue developing the team and build on the experience gained at this World Cup.

We have shown that we can compete with strong nations. Now we need to build on that consistency and become even more efficient in crucial moments.

torwart.de: What message would you like to convey to the Iranian fans after this World Cup?

Alin Dincă: I would like to express my sincere thanks for the extraordinary support.

Of course, we would have loved to give our country the gift of reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time. Unfortunately, we didn't manage to do that.

However, I am convinced that this team possesses character, quality, and great potential for development. If we continue on this path, we will experience many more special moments in the future.
