Iranian star Alireza Beiranvand in an interview (firo)
Iran remained unbeaten in the World Cup group stage yet still had to head home early. What made it particularly bitter was that the team had come closer than ever before to reaching the knockout stage for the first time.
One of Iran's standout players was Alireza Beiranvand. The national team goalkeeper delivered one of the best goalkeeping performances of the group stage, particularly during the 0–0 draw against Belgium. In an exclusive interview with torwart.de, Beiranvand discusses the painful elimination, his work with goalkeeping coach Alin Dincă, his understanding of modern goalkeeping, and his admiration for Manuel Neuer.
Part 1: Alireza on Iran's bitter World Cup exit after the group stage...
Alireza Beiranvand is playing in his third World Cup with Iran this year (firo)
"Sometimes the smallest details make the difference"
torwart.de: Alireza, Iran was eliminated from the tournament in unfortunate fashion after three intense group matches. How difficult was that moment for you and the team?
Alireza Beiranvand: Naturally, it was a very painful moment. When you represent your country at a World Cup, you carry the hopes of millions of people with you. When the final whistle blew and we realized our journey had come to an end, disappointment was the overriding feeling. After all, we knew how much hard work we had put in over the preceding months.
At the same time, football sometimes reminds you that effort alone isn't always enough. We fought in every match, stuck together as a team, and never gave up. Of course, as players, we wanted to stay in the tournament, but we also had to accept the reality of football. Sometimes, the smallest details determine whether you advance or have to go home.
Personally, I always try to focus on what we can learn from a situation rather than just looking at what we’ve lost. Every major tournament teaches you something about yourself, your teammates, and the highest level of football.
Despite the disappointment, I am proud of my teammates. We showed discipline, character, and resilience under difficult circumstances.
torwart.de: Iran remained unbeaten in the group stage yet was still eliminated from the tournament. How do you assess this World Cup?
Alireza Beiranvand: I think both perspectives are valid. Missing out on the knockout stage hurts because we were convinced we had the quality to reach the next round. At the same time, being eliminated while remaining unbeaten shows just how fine the margins can be at this level.
At the same time, we proved that Iranian football can hold its own against strong opponents. We were well-organized, disciplined, and united as a team. Matches at this level are often decided by small details. So, while disappointment prevails, we also take away a great deal of confidence for the future.
torwart.de: What was missing in the final group match against Egypt?
Alireza Beiranvand: There wasn't just one single decisive reason. At this level, advancing is decided by details: a single decision, a finish, or a defensive action.
We controlled large parts of the game well but weren't efficient enough in the crucial moments. These experiences will help us continue to develop.
Part 2: Alireza on his big game against Belgium...

"My focus is always on the next action"
torwart.de: You delivered one of the best goalkeeping performances of the group stage against Belgium. When did you get the feeling that this could be *your* game?
Alireza Beiranvand: I don't think that way during a match. My focus is always just on the next action. I felt very comfortable and secure because the communication with my defenders was working perfectly.
After that first big save, I naturally found my rhythm more and more. However, my goal at all times was to help the team—not to think about personal recognition.
torwart.de: That save against Maxim De Cuyper—was it technique, anticipation, or instinct?
Alireza Beiranvand: Great saves never come from instinct alone. Even before the shot is taken, correct positioning, reading the attack, and recognizing the shooter's body language play a crucial role.
When the ball actually comes towards the goal, the reaction is based on thousands of repetitions in training. Good preparation creates that instinct.
torwart.de: How do you maintain your concentration for the full 90 minutes against a team like Belgium?
Alireza Beiranvand: Concentration begins long before a potential shot on goal. It’s about constantly watching the game, communicating continuously with teammates, and recognizing situations early.
Controlled breathing, correct positioning, and communicating with my teammates help me stay mentally engaged in the game at all times.
Experience also plays an important role: over time, you learn to refocus immediately after every action.
Part 3: Alireza on working with his goalkeeping coach Alin Dincă...
Der iranische Torwart-Trainer Alin Dinca (firo)
"Alin prepares us for situations before they happen"
torwart.de: In your view, what makes Alin Dincă stand out as a goalkeeper coach?
Alireza Beiranvand: I believe one of the most important qualities of a goalkeeper coach is the ability to prepare you for situations before they actually occur. That is exactly what I value most about working with Alin Dincă.
torwart.de: What does your preparation for an opponent look like in practice?
Alireza Beiranvand: Our preparation doesn't start on matchday; it begins several days beforehand with a detailed analysis of the opponent. We examine how individual players finish, which foot they prefer, how they handle crosses, how they behave in one-on-one situations, and even how they react under pressure. When you step onto the pitch with that knowledge, you’re rarely caught off guard because many potential scenarios are already in your mind.
torwart.de: What does Alin place special emphasis on during training?
Alireza Beiranvand: On the training pitch, Alin places enormous importance on details. Sometimes it’s just a minor correction: body angle, the first step, the starting position, or the timing when coming off the line. Yet, at the international level, those few centimeters can determine whether you save the ball or concede a goal.
What I also really appreciate is that we don't just train to make spectacular saves. Every drill serves a tactical purpose. We recreate match situations, discuss various possible solutions, and analyze why one decision is better than another.
This allows you to develop not only your technique but also your understanding of the game.
torwart.de: How does he manage to involve all three goalkeepers?
Alireza Beiranvand: Alin creates an atmosphere where every goalkeeper is included. Even though only one of us starts the match, all three goalkeepers contribute throughout the week. We challenge each other, exchange ideas, and improve together. Healthy competition is important, but so is mutual respect. Alin has managed to strike the right balance here.
torwart.de: What does his personality mean to you?
Alireza Beiranvand: Personally, I also value his calmness. Top-level football brings immense pressure, especially at a World Cup. As a goalkeeper, you need people around you who remain clear-headed and calm. Alin possesses this ability. He knows when to push someone, when a correction is needed, and—above all—when it is about instilling confidence. Sometimes, a few words at the right moment are worth more than an entire training session.
Throughout my career, I have worked with various goalkeeping coaches, and each of them has taught me something valuable. With Alin, I feel I have developed further, particularly in areas like decision-making, positioning, and tactical understanding. He is constantly looking for new ideas and modern training methods, yet he never loses sight of the fundamentals of our position. In my view, this combination of innovation and classic goalkeeping principles is one of his greatest strengths.
Ultimately, football is always about trust. A goalkeeper needs to trust his defenders, his teammates, and his coach. When that trust is there, you play with more freedom and confidence. I believe that working together has not only helped me become a better goalkeeper but also a stronger leader for the team.

torwart.de: What role does discussing match situations together play?
Alireza Beiranvand: We spend a lot of time talking about the game. After training, we go over situations again, exchange views, and analyze different ways to handle them. Alin encourages these conversations because he wants us to think like goalkeepers, not just react like them.
For me, that is one of the biggest differences between genuine experience and simply getting older. Experience means understanding why something happened and how to handle it better next time.
torwart.de: How important is it that all goalkeepers are treated equally?
Alireza Beiranvand: I really appreciate that Alin treats every goalkeeper with the same respect. Regardless of whether you are the number one or not, everyone feels involved in the process. That builds trust and ensures that the training standard remains high every day.
torwart.de: Do you still learn new things after so many years as a national team goalkeeper?
Alireza Beiranvand: I have always believed that a goalkeeper never stops learning. Even after many years with the national team, I still discover small details that can improve my game. Sometimes it’s a different movement before a shot, a better starting position, or a different way of reading an attacker's body language.
Often, it is precisely these small details that distinguish a good save from an outstanding save.
torwart.de: How important is the human side of the working relationship?
Alireza Beiranvand: For me, the human side is just as important as the technical side. We spend many weeks together during training camps and tournaments. You need an environment where people enjoy working, can speak openly with one another, and where everyone feels supported.
Alin has managed to strike that balance. He demands a high standard every day but also understands the psychological side of goalkeeping. That connection is one of the reasons why I really enjoy working with him.
Ultimately, goalkeeper training isn't just about improving technique. It’s also about building self-confidence, a sense of responsibility, and the ability to make the right decision under pressure. I believe our daily work reflects exactly those principles.
torwart.de: Why is the atmosphere within the goalkeeping group so important?
Alireza Beiranvand: What many people don't see is how much time goalkeepers spend together. For large parts of every training session, we work separately from the rest of the team. That’s why the atmosphere within the goalkeeping group is hugely important. If that environment is positive, everyone develops. If it isn't, making progress becomes much harder.
torwart.de: How do you manage to compete with each other without viewing one another as adversaries?
Alireza Beiranvand: One of Alin’s greatest strengths is that he has created a culture where we compete every day without seeing each other as enemies. Of course, every goalkeeper wants to play. That’s completely normal. At the same time, however, we understand that the level of the entire group is more important than any single individual. When a goalkeeper improves, it challenges the others to improve as well.

Part 4: Alireza on his individual goalkeeping philosophy...
"The best goalkeepers combine both worlds"
torwart.de: How important is the transition game to your goalkeeper DNA?
Alireza Beiranvand: Very important. A goalkeeper's primary task is, of course, to protect his own goal. However, if he can launch a counter-attack with the right throw or pass, he gives his team an additional weapon.
That is why initiating play is not just about technique, but above all about making the right decision at the right moment.
torwart.de: Are classic goalkeeping skills underestimated today?
Alireza Beiranvand: You need a good balance. Playing with the feet is important, but defending the goal, positioning, commanding the penalty area, and communication remain the fundamentals of the position.
The best goalkeepers are those who combine both aspects.
Part 5: Alireza on Manuel Neuer...
"Was mich besonders beeindruckt, ist nicht nur seine technische Qualität, sondern auch seine Konstanz über so viele Jahre."
"Neuer has changed the understanding of the position"
torwart.de: In your view, how has Manuel Neuer changed the goalkeeping position?
Alireza Beiranvand: I think Manuel Neuer has changed the way many people understand the goalkeeping position. Before his generation, goalkeepers were judged primarily by their saves. Neuer demonstrated that a goalkeeper can also be a vital part of a team's tactical structure by controlling the space behind the defense and actively participating in the build-up play.
What impresses me most is not just his technical quality, but also his consistency over so many years. It is one thing to play at the highest level for a season or two; it is something else entirely to remain among the world's best goalkeepers for over a decade while constantly adapting to the evolution of the sport.
torwart.de: What do you particularly admire about his style of play?
Alireza Beiranvand: I have always admired his courage. He makes difficult decisions in situations where many other goalkeepers would hesitate. Whether rushing off his line, defending vast spaces behind the defense, or playing the ball with his feet under pressure, he has shown extraordinary self-confidence.
That confidence isn't arrogance; it stems from preparation, experience, and an outstanding understanding of the game.
At the same time, people sometimes focus so heavily on his distribution that they forget what a complete goalkeeper he is.
His positioning, his timing, his one-on-one ability, and his knack for making crucial saves in the biggest matches are just as impressive as his work with the ball. These fundamentals are the reason he has managed to hold his own at the highest level for so long.
torwart.de: What can you personally take away from his career?
Alireza Beiranvand: Every goalkeeper has their own identity. Football would be less interesting if we all tried to play exactly the same way. I have always tried to develop my own strengths while learning from the best goalkeepers in the world.
Watching players like Neuer reminds you that there is always a higher level to reach if you remain open-minded and willing to keep learning.
For me, an important lesson from his career is that development never stops. Even after winning everything, he kept looking for ways to improve. I believe that this specific mindset is what distinguishes truly great goalkeepers from very good ones. Talent is important, but curiosity, discipline, and a willingness to keep learning are what allow you to stay at the top for many years.
Part 6: Alireza on the role of experience in goalkeeping...
"Talent alone is never enough"
torwart.de: How do things change as you gain experience?
Alireza Beiranvand:Experience brings composure. You recognize situations sooner, react less emotionally, and evolve into a leader through your own conduct.
The pressure never disappears completely. However, over time, you learn to handle it better.
torwart.de: What do you take away from this World Cup?
Alireza Beiranvand: I leave this tournament proud of our effort, yet fully aware that we could have achieved more.
The World Cup showed us once again that, at this level, every detail can be decisive. These experiences and insights will make us stronger for the future.
torwart.de: What message would you like to share with young goalkeepers?
Alireza Beiranvand: Talent alone is never enough. Work on yourselves every day, accept mistakes as part of the learning process, respect your coaches and teammates, and never lose your passion for goalkeeping.
Success is built on discipline, humility, and perseverance.
torwart.de: Alireza, thank you very much for this interview and the fascinating insights; we wish you all the best for the future.
Alireza Beiranvand: You're very welcome. I wish all goalkeepers the best, too.
